On the 28th of October 1940, The Greek dictator
Metaxas gave his answer to Mussolini (and thus in effect to Hitler) who had
asked him if Greece would like to join what was known as ‘The Axis’. His answer
was Όχι. And in case of any
doubt, that is the Greek word for ‘NO’. Ever since, on that day throughout the
country and indeed everywhere they are to be found, Greeks celebrate their
independence, their refusal to let other countries tell them what to do.
