Lysistrata for Beginners

Among the items in yesterday evening's entertainment here in Alonnisos was the following adaptation by Phillipa Smith (Modern Greek version by me) of Aristophanes' great feminist classic. It went down a treat with a mostly Anglophone but also partly Greek audience.

Lysistrata for beginners (working title)

Characters: Narrator, Lysistrata, chorus of old women, chorus of old men, a husband, a wife, the Commissioner

All seven characters sit in a row facing the audience as follows

H -  OM - C  -  N -  L - OW - W

They stand up only for their lines, and keep deadpan expressions on their faces.  Each waits for the previous speaker to sit, before standing to say their line – if there is audience laughter the character waits until it is over before standing.

This is done with a few very basic props and token piece of costume

Narr:      Εμείς είμαστε οι Έλληνες ηθοποιοί, και αυτοί είναι οι Αγγλικοί υπώτιτλοι

Narr Eng: They are the Greek players and we are the English subtitles
