Isn’t it funny how a bear likes honey?

Well no not really; almost everyone likes honey, so Dimitri, a.k.a. Honey Boy, is a popular chap here in the island of Alonnisos. You know, big tall bald-headed guy, slim, but almost as wide across the shoulders as he is tall. He keeps bees in a proper ecological way without the artificial feeding on sugar resorted to by some apiarists, so his honey (well, his bees’ honey) comes entirely from the wild flowers and herbs of the island. So, because there has been so little rain here over the winter, and so there are fewer wild flowers, the bees have until now been unable to make more honey than they need for their own survival.

I am pleased to report that at last the bees have made some for the rest of us; they have been feeding on the nectar from wild thyme (They know a bank whereon the wild thyme grows) and so producing small quantities of very high quality honey.

Dimitri is often out talking encouragingly to his bees, but his premises are just off the main Old Village square (Plateia Christos) at the opposite end from the new bookshop. If you can’t find him, his mobile ’phone number is 6947 4285 85, so if you want some really high quality natural honey, give him a ring.
